Three siblings landed the Classic Jackpot in the Lotto 6/49. Hailing from the York region, the siblings landed a prize of a whopping $5 million in the Lotto 6/49 draw that was conducted on January 4th, 2023.
If the three decide to split their winnings evenly, each of them will receive a sum of $1,666,666.
The winners
On Tuesday, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation announced that Yogarajah Ponnuthurai and Arulvathani Uthayakumar from Woodbridge and Kleinburg’s Thavarajah Ponnuthurai were the three winners.
It has been about a year since the three siblings started playing the lottery together and it was Thavarajah who went to the store for checking their lottery ticket for the January 4th draw.
He realized that they had won a major prize and called his siblings for sharing the news. Arulvathani said that she could not believe it.
According to Yogarajah, he started crying when he received the call and had fallen to the ground due to shock. The three then went for a family dinner in order to celebrate their big win.
As far as plans for the win are concerned, they include assisting family members and buying new cars. The lucky ticket had been purchased from MI Fuel located on Highway 27 in Woodbridge.
Recent win
The Lotto 6/49 draw took place on Wednesday, March 1st, 2023 and it saw a number of winning tickets sold in the Toronto area.
According to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG), a ticket that was purchased in Mississauga landed the $5 million Classic Jackpot in the draw.
As far as the Gold Ball draw is concerned, there was a winning ticket sold in Etobicoke that was worth $1 million.
The OLG said that there were an additional two winning Encore tickets that were sold in Bruce County and Toronto worth $100,000 each.
The changes
A few months ago, the format for the Lotto 6/49 format was changed. The main Classic draw now has a $5 million jackpot in which players are allowed to choose their numbers, or go with the quick pick option.
Meanwhile, the Gold Ball Draw is one that has a guaranteed prize of $1 million.
The OLG said that it is guaranteed in the Gold Ball jackpot that the winner will receive a $1 million prize, or get a growing jackpot that begins at $10 million and can surpass $60 million.
The Lotto 6/49 draw is conducted twice a week, every Wednesday and Saturday.
